On the morning of November 5, 2007, the Hood River Watershed Group (HRWG) and many partners completed the last phase of a major stream clean-up on Indian Creek, where it transects the new Columbia Gorge Community College (CGCC) Indian Creek campus in Hood River.

The site had been used as a major community dump 15-25 years ago.  Up to 9 old car bodies along with construction debris and piles of rubbish near an old Diamond Fruit dam were identified and targeted for removal.

Given steep terrain and wet soils in the canyon, the watershed group and college determined that the best means of removing the material would be via helicopter.  BPA Transmission Services agreed to donate one day’s helicopter support from their Aircraft Services division to get the job done. Preparations for the airlift began!

Volunteers work to gather, bundle and remove garbage back in early October in preparation for the airlift day.

The volunteers managed to build quite a pile, while leaving the larger stuff for the helicopter to remove.

FID successfully accessed the car dump at Indian Creek and was able to free-up the car bodies from the bank.

Airlift Day! Pilot, Wayne Noonan of BPA gives a safety talk to the volunteers on the day of the lift.

Wayne Noonan peers down from the cockpit to watch the positioning of the garbage on the line below the copter.

Working in this dense vegetation was no easy task for the pilot or the volunteers.

Skilled BPA workers guided volunteers as they gathered trash to be lifted from the creek by the helicopter.

Wayne skillfully placed the old car bodies on a trailor donated by Hood River Garbage Service and RGGB of Parkdale.

Volunteers at the off-load site made quick work of adjusting the car bodies on the trailer while Wayne went to retrieve the next load.

Volunteers at the off-load site quickly disconnected the lift cables from the garbage and separated it into the appropriate dumpster for disposal.

Volunteers had their hands full as more and more garbage was pulled from the creek.
