Every spring the Hood River SWCD hosts a native tree and shrub sale to promote planting native species and give local landowners a convenient and inexpensive way to obtain them.  We offer a variety of native conifers, deciduous trees and shrubs.  These bare-root seedlings are 1-2 years old.

Why plant with natives? Because native plants are adapted to living in our unique climate, they require less water, fertilizer and other inputs to maintain.  So planting with natives saves you time and money!  Not to mention the benefits of enhanced wildlife habitat, soil stabilization and water conservation that you’ll enjoy.

These seedlings will be delivered to the SWCD in early April of 2012.  Tree and shrub orders can be placed now by mail, e-mail or phone (541-386-4588). The orders will be filled in the order in which they are received, so get your requests in early to ensure availability.

USDA hardiness zones are based on a single factor: average minimum temperature. Lower numbered zones experience lower temperatures, so plants must be tougher to survive there. Choose plants with a USDA zone equal to or lower than the zone where you live. For example, in Zone 7, a Zone 5 plant may be fine, but a Zone 8 plant probably won’t survive the winter.

*Hood River is typically considered a Zone 7 and Parkdale is closer to a Zone 6. All of the plants in our sale should do fine anywhere in the Hood River Valley as long as you consider their sun exposure and moisture needs.
