The Hood River Watershed Group's purpose is to sustain and improve the Hood River Watershed through education, cooperation and stewardship. One of 82 watershed councils in Oregon, the Hood River Watershed Group is a forum of landowners, citizens, growers, irrigation and water districts, environmental organizations, businesses, recreationists, governments and tribal representatives working together to benefit Hood River Valley's natural resources.

Union St. Riparian Enhancement Project In spring 2011, the Indian Creek Stewards, in cooperation with Pacific Power, OWEB, and many other community partners, replaced a half-acre of blackberry and knapweed with native trees and shrubs. Throughout Earth Week, school groups and community volunteers helped the Indian Creek Stewards mulch along the planted rows. The new plantings will hopefully form a healthy native plant community, which will provide better wildlife habitat, reduce erosion into Indian Creek, and help prevent the spread of noxious weeds. (Click on the photos for a larger view!) It will take a few years of growth before the new plantings are able to outcompete the noxious weeds at this site. Until then, the Indian Creek Stewards will be busy preventing the weeds from killing our plantings. If you would like to help with a weed-pulling party or otherwise get involved with this restoration project, please contact us. Storm Drain Markers to Protect Our Creeks The Watershed Group and the Indian Creek Stewards have begun a project to place “Do Not Dump, Drains to Stream” markers by storm drains throughout the City of Hood River. Storm drains flow directly into streams, creeks, and rivers without going through a water treatment facility. Therefore anything poured into a storm drain, whether it is motor oil, detergent, or hazardous chemicals, flows directly into our watershed and can harm fish and the environment. In order to expand the storm drain marker project, the Watershed Group is looking for business and community partners. If you are interested in participating in this project, please contact Steve. (Click on the photos for a larger view!) If you would like to learn more about where to dispose of used motor oil and other automotive fluids, check out our brochure in English or Spanish. If you would like hard copies of this brochure, stop by our office or contact Megan.
Work began in mid-April of 2010 on the long-awaited decommissioning and removal of Powerdale Dam. The dam has been removed along with the fish facility, intake structure, power canal, steel flume and sand settling basin at the project’s upstream location.
The Hood River Watershed Group and other project partners documented the removal of the dam. For more information and photos of the process:
Hood River Watershed Group 2009-11 Biennial Report Available! The 2009-11 Biennial Report was submitted to OWEB in mid-August 2011. The report covers the group's many activities between July 2009 and June 2011. Some of the narrative describes group coordination and other actions performed by HRWG staff. However, the majority of the accomplishments reported are directly attributable to what HRWG members have accomplished over the past two years. Follow this link to download the report! Middle Fork Irrigation District Completes Two Watershed Improvement Projects Page 1 Page 2 Read up on their accomplishments in this article featured in the Hood River News on January 27, 2010 Indian Creek Golf Course Raptor Perch Installation August 5, 2009, the Indian Creek Stewards completed the raising of their first habitat pole ("raptor pole"), in cooperation with the Indian Creek Golf Course. The installation is intended to augment a dedicated natural area along the creek, increase vole and mice predation by hawks and owls (and decrease golf course maintenance), and provide space for the mounting of an additional habitat box or two for other birds or bats. **Check out the Ruralite article covering this project!** (Click on the photos for a larger view!)
Thanks so much to everyone that participated!
